State Milk Production Up Slightly

January milk output up 0.5%.

January 2012 milk production totaled 770 million pounds in Minnesota, up 0.5 percent from the 766 million pounds produced in January 2011, according to the USDA NASS Minnesota Field Office.

Revised December 2011 milk output was 753 million pounds.

Minnesota's production per cow averaged 1,655 pounds in January 2012, up 25 pounds from last January.  The revised December 2011 rate was 1,620 pounds per cow.  The average number of milk cows on farms in Minnesota during January 2012 was 465,000 head, unchanged from the revised December 2011 number, but down 5,000 head from one year ago.

Nationally, milk production in the 23 major States during January totaled 15.8 billion pounds, up 3.7 percent from January 2011. December revised production, at 15.4 billion pounds, was up 2.7 percent from December 2010.  Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,857 pounds for January, 46 pounds above January 2011.  The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.50 million head, 93,000 head more than January 2011, and 13,000 more than December 2011.
