Roundup-Ready alfalfa was re-released in early 2011 after a lengthy review by USDA-APHIS, but has remained somewhat controversial in the public sphere. However, alfalfa hay growers have often been left out of this discussion.
University of California scientists are conducting a survey of alfalfa growers on the issues associated with Roundup Ready Alfalfa to better understand farmers' experiences and current views of the technology. They are looking for the experiences of all alfalfa farmers--those who have grown RRA as well as those who have not grown RRA—and conventional, organic, small or large, who produce alfalfa for any purpose.
The survey is not open to non-growers.
Growers are urged to give their input at: ucce.ucdavis.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=7247
The results will be published (with participants kept confidential) at the Western Alfalfa and Forage Symposium, December 11-13, posted on the web and emailed to participants.
The online survey, which takes about 15 minutes to complete, will be closed Nov. 1.Source: Steve Orloff, University of California adviser, Yreka, CA, and Dan Putnam U-C Davis alfalfa specialist
