The Minnesota Soybean Growers Association applauds Metro Transit's recent announcement that it will double the biodiesel content of its fuel to a 10% blend starting this month.
"Metro Transit's decision shows great initiative and responsibility," says Lance Peterson, Underwood, MSGA's president. "Mass transit is a perfect venue in which to utilize a domestically produced product that is good for the environment, the economy and energy security."
The action, which is part of Metro Transit's Go Greener Initiative, will reduce its consumption of diesel fuel by 1.2 million gallons. By March 2008, Metro Transit plans to increase its biodiesel use to 20%, thereafter, alternating between a 20% (B20) summer blend and a 10% (B10) blend during the winter months.
On September 29, 2005 Minnesota became the first state in the nation to implement a 2% biodiesel mandate and has since become the nation's leader in the use of renewable fuels with the highest renewable fuel use per capita in the nation.
"Today's announcement comes just weeks after Governor Pawlenty's proclamation to increase the state's biodiesel mandate to 20% by 2015," Peterson says. "Currently, soybean oil is the main feedstock for producing biodiesel and MSGA has worked very hard to ensure that the state's biodiesel supply is of the highest quality and meets all the standards set by the industry."
Metro Transit, a service of the Metropolitan Council, has been using a 5% soy-based biodiesel mixture for the past 14 months, and buses at one of its five garages have been using B10 on a trial basis since May.
