The Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation Annual Meeting is set for November 17-19 at the Northland Inn in Brooklyn Park.
The meeting will have a variety of sessions on agricultural issues, motivational and leadership development, as well as, Young Farmers & Ranchers contests and award banquets.
This year's featured speaker will be Dick Beardsley at the Saturday, November 19 noon luncheon. Dick Beardsley became the most famous runner/athlete in the world, by losing a race in the early 1980s. In the 1982 Boston Marathon, Beardsley, foiled by a motorcycle that cut him off near the end, finished two seconds behind Alberto Salazar in a contest often called one of the most memorable in marathon history. It was the closest finish ever at the world's premier marathon, and both runners broke the course and the American records.
The story of Dick's running career alone is the stuff of legends, but it is the story that comes after that draws people in and keeps them listening. His story of overcoming extreme obstacles speaks to anyone who loves competition, who has survived catastrophe or who has pursued a seemingly impossible goal.
Saturday morning's educational sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m. and repeat again at 10 a.m.
General Manager of the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance, Hugh Whaley, will be sharing an update on the USFRA and how to effectively communicate with consumers while building their trust. Mary Kay Thatcher, AFBF senior director of congressional relations, will also present a session on the 2012 Farm Bill and Minnesota elected leaders will preview the 2012 legislative session.
The voting delegate session will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, November 18 with the election of president, district III director, district IV director and district VII director.
Attendees will have the opportunity to visit with other agriculture leaders, elected officials and fellow Farm Bureau members on Friday, November 18 at a 4:30 p.m. social hour in the trade show area prior to the banquet.
The awards banquet and Foundation auction will also be held on Friday, November 18 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Many distinguished Farm Bureau members will be recognized including: Awards of Excellence, Honorary Life Awards, the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award and the Foundation Awards.
Friday's banquet will be followed by the Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation fundraising auction.
The Saturday, November 19 noon luncheon will include the keynote speaker, President's address and the announcement of the YF&R award winners. The annual meeting will conclude with the grand prize drawing – an air and hotel expense paid trip for one to the American Farm Bureau Annual Meeting January 8-11, 2012 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The always anticipated YF&R Discussion Meet semifinals and final, Achievement Award interviews and Excellence in Agriculture presentations will be held throughout the day on Saturday, November 19. The Final Four Discussion Meet will begin at 11:15 a.m.
Annual Meeting Tours
Join the Farm Bureau group on a Harvest for All service activity and tour of the Minneapolis Star Tribune printing press on Friday, November 18 from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Harvest for All is a program in partnership with Feeding America to help feed the millions of Americans who face hunger every day. The Minneapolis Star Tribune is the largest newspaper in Minnesota and is published seven days a week in both a metropolitan and statewide edition.
Registration is $20 and includes lunch and transportation.
Food, Land and People Training
New to the MFBF Annual Meeting this year is the Food, Land and People Training, a nonprofit organization committed to helping people of all ages better understand the interrelationships among agriculture, the environment and people of the world. This training will provide excellent ideas for county Farm Bureau ag in the classroom activities. The curriculum consists of 55 hands-on lesson plans, developed and tested by more than 1,000 educators. The cost is $35 and includes all 55 lesson plans, materials and lunch. The training will take place on Friday, November 18 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
