Barn-busting attendance at state fair

Between the crowds and the heat, record attendance at the 'Great Minnesota Get-Together' surpasses the 2 million mark.

If you attended the Minnesota State Fair this year, you were one of the 2 million-plus folks who helped break attendance numbers for 2018.

State fair organizers say the overall attendance record of 2,046,533 surpassed the previous record set last year of 1,997,320.

The biggest day of the 2018 fair? Sept. 1, with a single-day attendance of 270,426.

The 2018 fair, called the “Great Minnesota Get-Together,” also set four other daily attendance record days: opening day Aug. 23, Aug. 25, Aug. 29 and Aug. 30.

Over its 12-day span, the state fair hosted 900 free music performances, brought in nearly 15,000 animals and saw 217 baby animals born at the CHS Miracle of Birth barn. It drew more than 36,000 entries in the agricultural and creative competitions that rivaled each other for $1.5 million in prize money.

The Purple Ribbon 4-H Livestock Auction on Aug. 25 set seven new record prices and raised more than $690,000 to benefit youth programs statewide, of which $62,000 was awarded to 40 youth in scholarships.
