MARL Names New Executive Director

Dan Hoffman, Class IV MARL grad and farm business management instructor, will lead the organization. Applications for Class VII being accepted.

The Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership Board of Directors announced Thursday that Dan Hoffman, Rochester, will serve as MARL's new executive director.

Hoffman is a farm business management instructor at Riverland Community College in Austin and host of Farm Connections on KSMQ Public TV. Earlier this year, he also was named Ag Advocate of the Year by the Southeast Minnesota Ag Alliance.

Hoffman is a graduate of MARL Class IV.

Throughout his agricultural career, Hoffman has been active with the Minnesota Association of Agricultural Educators; Minnesota Pork Producers - Mower County associate member; Minnesota Corn Growers and Minnesota Soybean Growers - Mower County; National Farm and Ranch Business Management Education Association; National Association Agricultural Educators; National Education Association; High County Energy - founding board member.

MARL is a dynamic leadership development program for active and engaged adult agricultural and rural leaders in Minnesota. Its goal: To develop the skills of state ag and rural leaders so they may maximize their impact and effectiveness in local, state, national international arenas.

Every two years, approximately 30 participants are selected for the class. About 2/3 of the participants are involved in production agriculture. The other 1/3 are business, civic, government and organization leaders in agriculture and rural Minnesota.

Class members participate in a series of nine in-state seminars, a national study tour in Washington D.C., and an international study tour. The current class—Class VI—will be traveling to Morocco in late February.

The MARL program is a public/private partnership, involving the Southwest Minnesota State University Foundation and the University of Minnesota Extension

Applications for Class VII are currently being accepted. Selection criteria for class members include demonstrated leadership activity, and aspirations for future leadership roles with greater responsibility. Applications are due March 31, 2012. New class members will be announced in mid-May.
